ANZAC Day, 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings
As you're probably unaware, Saturday the 25th marks 100 years since the Allied forces landed at ANZAC Cove in the Dardanelles during WW1, a date that has become our (and Australia's) national day of remembrance, and obviously was a particularly significant day in the whole scheme of the war for the Allied Forces.

The missus and I were talking about it the other day, and she really knew nothing about it at all.

It turns out that history at her school didn't really cover any of the World Wars, and I wondered how that was possible.

Surely they are the most important military conflicts in history?

Anyway

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

I went to Coles this morning to do my weekly shopping. The fucking place was SHUT!!

I held a minute's silence for myself, and then drove back home.

You make a good point.
To expand on that, I believe it quite proper to remember those lives lost in two World Wars, but I object to bringing the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan invasions into the mix.
Those were wars of choice and aggression. I'm not saying that the soldiers involved should be vilified, but there should be a sense of national shame for the country's involvement, in the same way that Germans feel about WW2.

It seems like we're seeing the Americanisation of Anzac Day, unfortunately. It's changing from a day of remembrance to a marketing exercise from government and the Media that leans heavily on patriotism.

Yesterday someone wished me a "happy Anzac Day".

For everything the western world wants proof unless of course it is against a country they wish to control then they can make bullshit into reality.
Yes I deny that it was genocide it was a tragedy a disgusting act by Turkey's governing powers. Turkey was close to loosing itself and being cut up and swallowed by the UK Russia France etc and in War when you are getting hit from every side and then a minority within start to kill their own countrymen and take sides with the enemy who are promising them the world or basically Turkey then what do you do?,so Turkey decided unfortunately to deport that minority the vast Majority Innocent and yes though that was wrong It had little to do with exterminating a race, that does not even come into it it was about saving Turkeys own backside and had any other Christian country done exactly the same against a Muslim people no one would say fuck all today.
Turkey has 1 million papers on the matter and will open all their archives and on top of that will open all their Armies Archives too of that time, now over to Armenia who refuse to budge or even look into the history of this matter does the world care that Turkey wants to look at this with all the worlds top historians if they wish to do so No ! because the whole thing would be too embarrassing .
Weapons of mass destruction only happened a few years ago Ridikzappa and lies can easily be made to look true but where is the proof that Turkey was purposely wishing to kill a whole race ?, the whole Christian world hated Turks at that time , they were the foremost representative of Islam and they had to be stopped by hook or by crook, and even today there must be pay back.
Armenian's built Turkey and they were some of the nations greatest Turks at the top of every field banking government Architecture and many more they were seen as no different as any other Turk and were doing brilliantly, without their brilliance Turkey would not be what it is today, but at that time in 1915 for whatever reason all that was not enough for some of them and they started a revolt knowing that Turkey was already deep in the shit.
Everything in this world is about money, If in America you have a million or two of Armenian votes then a Genocide occurred if you have a million or two of Turkish votes it did not the world is that simple.
May all those Armenian's Who died in such terrible conditions in 1915 Rest In Peace.

For me It is simple and for 95% of all Turks too, this is not about Genocide but moreover how to screw with Turkey and as the saying goes " If you tell a lie long enough and loud enough It becomes the truth".

Of course I understand the special significance it has to the ANZACS. What I don't like is the fact none of the other countries looses are rarely mentioned. Except maybe the Turks.

As previoulsy advised watch The Water Deviner. Excellent movie.

Re: ANZAC Day, 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings
My son is reading a book about Gallipoli from the perspective of the Turks. It's not a polemic, just explaining it from their perspective. As Hairy said, soldiers generally are very similar on both "sides" of a war - it's the people that send them to war that are usually the problem.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Re: ANZAC Day, 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landings
Being of Turkish descent I can tell you all now that Turks never look upon this day with even a modicum of victory they basically try to remember the sacrifice that their Soldiers gave simply defending their country, so forgive me for saying May all who died Rest In Peace, especially the Turks who died on their own soil defending it.

The English have rarely been kind to the Turks about this war where as the Australians/New Zealanders always say they were simply defending their country It was us who were invading their country and we would have done the same.

War is shit, Soldiers are mostly brave young petals who lay around its edge.
